Lidl, a budget supermarket has announced 1,000 new jobs for its largest British distribution centre, ever. Bosses confirmed a new warehouse on Monday of around a million square feet to service stores across Greater London.
The distribution centre – the fourth to open in London – will be Lidl’s largest in the UK at double the size of any of its other warehouses – and will pave the way for hundreds more jobs in the commuter town.
It follows the openings of supporting warehouses in Belvedere, Northfleet and Enfield, and 16 more outside of the M25. Lidl said the new centre will manage the supply and distribution of food and non-food products to Lidl stores in and around the M25, whilst “supporting the supermarket’s continued growth in Greater London”.
A further five new stores are also underway with branches in Shepherds Bush, Walthamstow Central, South Ruislip, Hornchurch and Rosehill to open over the next two months.
Ingo Fischer, at Lidl, said: “As more London households choose to shop at Lidl we are committed to the continued investment in our operations and infrastructure to support our growth.
“With five new stores opening in the next two months alone, and further store expansion and development plans in place for the Greater London area across the new financial year and beyond, this new warehouse is vital in supporting our ambitious expansion plans in and around the M25.”
The warehouse is part of the chain’s £1.45 billion expansion project that will bring 5,000 houses, three primary schools and a further 1m sq ft of commercial and retail space to the UK by December 2018. It comes after the supermarket giant opened two distribution centres in Exeter and Wednesbury – in the West Midlands – last year.
David Skinner, of Aviva Investors, said: “We are delighted to have secured Lidl as an owner occupier on this important strategic land site. “The wider consented scheme has consent for over 5,000 homes and, following the recent opening of the new M1 motorway junction, we intend to commence development in early 2019”.
Lidl first opened in the UK in 1994 and has since expanded to over 690 stores nationwide.
