Train Ticket Price 2025 Hike Check New AC & Sleeper Rates

According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Railways, the revised fares will be effective from July 1. The average fare hike per 100 km is as follows:

Class                    | Old Fare  New Fare

AC First Class     | ₹240         | ₹260

AC 2 Tier             | ₹200         | ₹216

AC 3 Tier             | ₹170         | ₹183

Sleeper Class     | ₹90          | ₹96

Express (General) | ₹60          | ₹64

Under the new fare structure, passengers will now have to pay more based on the distance traveled — especially for long-distance journeys or AC class travel.

Passengers traveling up to 500 kilometers will not be affected. However, for travel beyond 500 km, the fare will increase by ₹0.50 (50 paise) per km.

For those traveling in non-AC Mail or Express trains, there will be an increase of 1 paisa per km.

For passengers traveling in AC coaches (AC First, Second, Third Tier, etc.), a 2 paise per km increase will be applicable.

This means long-distance travel will become significantly more expensive.

When Will the New Railway Tariff Be Applicable?

The revised fares will apply to all reservations and on-the-spot bookings from July 1, 2025.

Tickets booked prior to this date will remain unaffected. While some passengers have called this hike unfair, others believe that if services and punctuality improve, paying a little extra is reasonable.

The Railway Ministry has listed four main reasons behind the fare hike:

  1. Rising diesel and electricity costs, which have pushed up train operation expenses.
  2. Improvement in passenger amenities and expansion of safety measures.
  3. Infrastructure upgrades, such as introducing semi-high-speed trains and expanding Vande Bharat services, which come with higher costs.
  4. To improve the financial health of Indian Railways and ensure better service delivery to passengers.

Who Will Be Most Affected?

Passengers traveling long distances, especially on routes like Delhi–Mumbai or Kolkata–Chennai.

Frequent travelers, such as business professionals and daily commuters.

During festive seasons and holidays, booking will now become even more expensive due to higher base fares.
